No 1: Fall Bay Lament

Two Pieces for Piano, Opus 6 (2025)

No 1: Fall Bay Lament.

Fall Bay Lament

My mother and father retired to Fall Bay Cottage overlooking Fall Bay near Rhossili in the Gower Peninsula. The Worms Head was visible in the distance.  They are both buried at St Mary’s Church up the road.

The work captures feelings during a funeral. It starts off with an old fashioned music that could be a funeral procession or liturgy.  Then the mind wonders off into the memories of the person about to be buried.   The middle section reflects the obituary, you are taken back to the life of the person, their achievements and careers, the optimism they would have felt during their life. The ups and downs of life, the plans and aspriations.

This section ends with a flip, as you realize that you too are in the middle of a life that will become the subject of an obituary. You go back to memories of your life, and finally the premonition of your own funeral.
